Prologue
A long time ago on a planet far from the Earth, there was a lively and prosperous kingdom that was ruled by a great ruler, a benevolent masked king named Arum. Despite having great power and the love of his people, Arum was terribly lonely and wished for a family of his own. Unfortunately, Arum didn't have a partner who he could do this with.
However, Arum was fortunate to find a spell in his mystical grimoire, a book of magic and spells, and it gave him and his husband a solution to their problem.
It was a process that involved Arum creating something called ‘Gaia Pods’, named after the mother goddess herself. They were a special plant-like bulb that allowed one to create their own offspring with a serum that was made with their blood.
Not wasting time, Arum was quick to create a Gaia Pod, and after using a serum made of his own blood and beautiful roses, and after injecting it into the pod, Arum had to wait patiently for three weeks for the process to be completed.
When those three weeks passed, Arum was informed by his most loyal and trusted butler that the Gaia Pod that was planted was opening, much like a flower blossoming on the first day of spring.
After rushing to the exquisite garden, the king was shocked to see a beautiful baby girl sitting in the pod, crying tears of gold. From that day forward, Arum raised the girl and made her their heir. Upon reaching adulthood, the girl, named Brier, would go on to have a beautifully crazy and eventful life as the wife of the God of Destruction of Universe #7, Lord Beerus.
And this is how it all unfolded.

DBZ: Waves of Freedom AU FAQ + Q&A:
Btw, these are just for fun- but feel free to submit any asks about my AU and the fanfic in the ask box!
Q: I’ve noticed many similarities to The Little Mermaid. Is this an actual adaptation or just a modern retelling?
A: Yes and No! I actually took inspiration from both the Disney movie and the original tale by Hans Christian Andersen. I also got inspired by DBZ, Brother Bear, and maybe even Mermaid Melody Pitchi Pitchi Pitch to make the story. Instead of going with the straightforward plot of the mermaid going on land to find love, I decided to have the main protagonist become a merperson and escape a life of surpression and shape their own destiny. Also, it’s basically the TLM but told from the POV of Eric, who is now promoted to the main character instead of the secondary one. And let’s be real here, the original story’s been almost done to death (No offense), and I wanted to do something fresh and new.
Q: Frieza is incredibly different in this story. How did the Emperor of Universe 7 end up being adapted into a tyrannical CEO in the fanfic?
A: I actually took elements from Triton (The authoritarian figure) and Ursula (The manipulative antagonist), as well as elements from his own character, like his charisma and merciless demeanor, especially when he drops more work on Vegeta like a bombshell in Chapter 2. Btw, his design is his Society Survival Saga design from Super Dragon Ball Heroes, but more elaborate to reflect that he’s a controlling CEO. Bonus points if he’s stroking a kitty cat.
Q: A detail I’ve noticed in the fanfiction is that it also centers on environmental themes, given that the company in the story is called Empire Oil Drilling Corps. Are there any other moments of this?
A: Yes! Frieza’s company claims to be helping the environment, when they’re really not- they’re actually planning to drill for oil and possibly harm the ocean, while the merpeople care for their home and take great joy in seeing it happy and healthy. It’s called Empire OIL DRILLING Corps for a good reason.
Q: What made you want to design the dual land and sea forms of the characters?
A: I wanted the characters to traverse worlds without being bound to a singular form, and I got inspired by H20: Just Add Water for this! To put it simply, duality is a massive theme in the fanfic, and so is balance. The land forms reflect the roles of the cast and are often comfortable to walk in and wear, while the sea forms take inspiration from various sea creatures from beneath the waves- or the Disney version of The Little Mermaid for Goku and Vegeta! In short, duality and balance are two sides of the same coin- one can’t exist without the other. Darkness and light, good and evil, black and white, and of course, Land and Sea.
Q: How did you develop Atlantis and the underwater + land worlds?
A: I took pages out of The Little Mermaid’s Atlantica, Aquaman’s version of Atlantis, Abzu, and Endless Ocean to get a feel for the undersea world. Each district in the now reborn city beneath the waves is named after a water deity in mythology, like Mazu (Chinese) and Chalchiuhtlicue (Aztec). But there are tons more, and the ocean dwelling part of the cast resides in homes across the city. And as for the land world aka Scalefall Bay, I got inspired by stories of various totalitarian regimes, such as 1984 and The Hunger Games, to get a feel for what Vegeta’s life on land is like. Monochrome and drab colors are used to convey a life of uniformity and oppression, as opposed to the bright and colorful realm beneath the surface of the ocean, where merpeople are free to be who they want to be.
Q: Did you have anything planned for the fanfic that sadly got cut?
A: Ohhh boy, do I have a ton for you! Let’s see, we have some scenes like an undersea race across the coral reef between Yamcha and Krillin, a flashback to Kid!Vegeta when he got the abalone from his dad, an entire subplot involving The Pride Troopers (Who are part time anglers and conspiracy theories who believe merpeople are real @thunder-jolt for the idea), another subplot in which Chi Chi’s worries come into play, you get the idea. Heck, I even had various ideas for the transformation Vegeta undergoes in Chapter 5 (Including one inspired by when Majin Vegeta did his Final Explosion to take out Majin Buu) before I settled on one I was satisfied with. Also, he was going to have more accessories in his merman form- jewels, pearls, armbands, pendants, earrings, tail anklets, and maybe even a tiara of sorts. But in the end I chose to just give him the water lily hairpin and the bracelet- both from Chapter 3. There was even a subplot where Zarbon became a siren after being all like “I’ll take the treasure instead!”, when he’s asked by Frieza to bring Vegeta back.
Q: Are there any cameos and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the story?
A: Yes! When Goku is explaining about merpeople society and how that every time they breach the surface, they always see something that was never there before; you can see Caulifla, Cabba, and Kale resting on a sandbank gazing out at a massive seaside city, Videl perching on a rock in the sunset, Yurin swimming up a river to see the various foundations lining the banks, the Kamikaze Fireballs (Ribrianne, Kakunsa, and Rozie) on the back of a whale gazing towards the clear night sky, and Broly, Cheelai, and Lemo watching the aurora borealis on an iceberg- and they’re all in their Mer forms. And it’s not limited to other characters from the Dragon Ball universe; too. Chris Sabat (Current Dub Vegeta) and Brian Drummond (Ocean Dub Vegeta) both make cameos in a cafe, and some of the Easter eggs are like when in Bulma’s lab, you can easily see a snowglobe with the Atlantica castle in it.
Q: Do you have any sequels or spin offs planned?
A: Not really, for now. But then again, you can always and I mean always insert your OCs and maybe some other characters into the story and see the world of Waves of Freedom through their eyes. It’s totally up to you. And like the ocean itself, the possibilities are endless, with the expansive world building, the cut content, and the diversity of the cast; your ideas can reach as far as the depths of the ocean and as high as your own imagination.

❝Sometimes it takes a good fall to really know where you stand.❞
•◉◓☆◓◉•
 "Suck my—"
The announcer's voice cut me off, calling for Junior's opponent to arrive. The blaring speakers were silenced as I sensed a distant energy behind me. Turning, I saw an old, nerdy man approaching, perhaps in his forties or fifties.
His light beige skin was smooth, complemented by neatly combed, short black hair. His black eyes, round and serene, exuded a calm and somewhat absent-minded expression behind glasses. A small, gentle smile lent his face an air of benign simplicity. He was dressed in a simple white button shirt and black pants, but he seemed vastly out of place in the martial arts arena.
I stepped aside, my eyes lingering on him as he walked past me. As he entered the ring, the speakers blared again, announcing his presence. "Ladies and gentlemen, Hero has arrived! Get ready, this sure will be an amazing battle!"
The crowd's excitement surged, their cheers growing louder in anticipation of the showdown between Junior and Hero. Hero apologized for his tardiness, explaining that he had lost his way. I would raise an eyebrow; he seemed like a goofy man just trying to live his life from my perspective while the other fighters beside me exchanged glances, their faces mirroring my own skepticism.
While I watched him, I sensed a familiar energy as Goku approached us. Krillin raised an eyebrow, curiosity lacing his tone. "Hey, where have you been?"
Goku, standing next to us, smiled sheepishly. "Oh, something. I'll tell ya later," he answered before falling silent. Tenshinhan's curiosity was piqued as he glanced at Goku, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Something, huh?" he repeated, a hint of skepticism in his voice.
Krillin chuckled at Goku's vague answer. "Classic Goku," he teased. "Always keeping secrets."
"Is that so?" I interjected, my tone tinged with curiosity and skepticism about Goku's sudden disappearance. I glanced at Goku, noting the surprise on everyone's faces as they turned to me. Goku, Tenshinhan, and Krillin couldn't help but react to my sudden interest in the conversation, while Yamcha regarded me with a hint of curiosity.
Goku chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head. "Yeah, you'll see soon enough," he replied cryptically.
"Get ready, the Second Semi-Final begins... now!"
The announcer's voice boomed over the microphone. Hero's eyes narrowed in defiance, an unexpected anger flashing behind them as he gazed at Junior. The crowd's cheers and chatter made it difficult to hear their exchange, but Junior's eyes widened in shock and disbelief. The tension between the two fighters was palpable.
Suddenly, Hero's energy surged, and he assumed a battle stance. With a swift upward motion of his hand, the ground trembled and an impulsive blast erupted, sending Junior soaring into the sky. The wind from the attack was so fierce that I had to close my eyes against the blinding light and brace myself to avoid being knocked over. The sound of the blast was deafening, leaving my ears ringing as I slowly opened my eyes to see the arena, now slightly crumbled and empty.
Another powerful explosion erupted from a mile away, shaking the ground once more. Squinting at the light as it diminished, I caught a glimpse of Hero descending before he landed gracefully, not breaking a sweat.
Junior reappeared behind Hero, slashing at him with sharp nails, but Hero vanished, reappearing above Junior, who turned too late. Hero bashed his knee into Junior's back, sending him crashing face-first into the arena ground with such force that the ground shattered, creating a hole. Junior fell through, breaking through the other side of the arena floor.
The crowd erupted in cheers at the match's progression, impressed by Junior's resilience. My eyes narrowed, an emotional turmoil brewing inside me as I observed the scene. Everything happened so fast.
Hero's skill was impressive, and for a moment, I hoped he might be the one to defeat Junior. However, something about Hero's fighting style seemed almost lethal, as if he were trying to kill Junior. Perhaps I was overthinking it, but his style was eerily reminiscent of King Piccolo's, it unnerved me.
As they faced each other again, Hero regained his bearings, his teeth gritted in determination. The others—Krillin, Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Goku—watched in stunned silence, their eyes glued to the unfolding events. The air was thick with suspense, every movement and attack charged with the possibility of a volatile outcome.
"Unbelievable," Tenshinhan muttered, his voice filled with astonishment at Hero's incredible strength and agility.
"Who is this guy?" Yamcha exclaimed, his voice a mix of disbelief and awe.
Krillin shook his head in disbelief. "What—how? He just—and—I've never seen anything like it."
The four of them continued to watch, their eyes glued to the battle. Tenshinhan's expression grew contemplative. "This fight seems personal. Hero is attacking Junior as if they were at war."
Hearing Tenshinhan's words confirmed my suspicions. Krillin raised an eyebrow, contemplating his statement. "Yeah, it does seem a bit intense for just a tournament fight," he agreed, his voice tinged with concern.
Yamcha nodded, his eyes fixed on the battle. "It's like there's more than just winning on his mind." Goku remained silent, his eyes narrowed as he studied Hero's movements, his expression inscrutable.
With a shout from Hero, he charged Junior with reverent speed, his quickened steps echoing on the floor. Junior prepared for the onslaught, eyes narrowing as they closed in on each other. Junior swung his hand to the left in a slash, but Hero halted abruptly, defying the momentum that had propelled him forward, catching Junior off guard.
Seizing the advantage, Hero struck a blow to Junior's abdomen; the sickening thud echoed through the arena, sending Junior hurling backward before he regained his stance. Hero charged at him again, tossing jabs and hooks left and right, yet they both seemed to block and avoid each attack with precision and inhuman speed, their movements a blur.
My eyes struggled to keep up, their bodies flickering across the ring. In a blink, Hero vanished, reappearing behind Junior, leg poised for a devastating kick. Junior, reacting with astonishing speed, caught Hero's leg before impact, gripping it fiercely.
With a powerful swing, Junior tossed Hero to the ground. Hero's agility shone through as he placed his hand on the floor, preventing a face-first crash, and performed a backflip to land gracefully. Junior did not waver. His energy spiked, creating an orb of light within his palm. He aimed and fired at Hero.
The blast was overwhelming, the blinding light forcing my eyes shut. The force behind it pushed spectators back, the wind roaring through the arena. However, I forced my eyes to open, determined to witness every moment. Through the blinding light and my astonishment; I saw Hero's hands outstretched, catching the blast and redirecting it upwards, away from the crowd.
My eyes widened at the sight. His hands hissed with smoke, the heat visibly intense; I knew the agony of such an act, having experienced it against Goku, yet Hero showed no signs of injury. It was a startling display of resilience.
What am I seeing right now?
Hero's expression was laced with fatigue and determination, while Junior, momentarily shocked, quickly regained his composure. It was clear that Junior now understood he could not underestimate this seemingly frail old man.
Yamcha broke the stunned silence first, his voice barely above a whisper. "How is he not seriously hurt from that?"
The audience was awestruck into silence by the display of power and endurance. Even the usually loquacious announcer was speechless, his voice lost in the sheer awe of the moment. I knew any normal human would have been severely injured, if not worse, by such an intense blast.
"This isn't normal at all," Krillin breathed out, his eyes still fixed on the arena. The fighters beside me could only watch, their eyes wide, their words lost. They had never seen such a display of strength and resilience before.
Despite the uncanny event, Junior displayed formidable power, surpassing even his father, King Piccolo, in speed and strength. I stayed silent, my gaze remaining on Junior as he stood his ground, his eyes narrowed at Hero, clearly sizing him up and analyzing him.
With the crowd dead silent, Junior's lips parted and spoke something I couldn't catch until Hero responded, "▯:⋊|♁⨅⌟◸.⋥.Ə| ∆∙◸.⋥.⨅⌟⨉⨉ ◸.⨉⨉ ⨅⌟◸.▯:⨕∙|▷ ▯.⊓⨉⨉◸.⋥.⋊|⨉⨉⨉⨉, ⨿⁚◸.⩞⩞◺⌝⊐:◺⌝" Translating... |Reading minds is dirty business, Piccolo.
What is this bullshit?
It caught me off guard; I couldn't discern his words, almost gibberish to my ears. It was a tongue I couldn't place, which only added to the mystery and tension of the moment. Junior seemed to understand, his eyes widening before responding in a bitter tone, "⨅⌟◺⌝ |▷◺⌝.⊓ ▯:⋊|♁⊐:⊐:|▷ ⨕∙∟◸.⋥.ɛ |▷◺⌝.⊓ ⩞♁⋥. ☉◺⌝◺⌝⊐: ∆∙⋊| P◸.⨕∙ ∟ ⨕∙ ∟♁⨕∙ ⨅⌟◸.⨉⨉Ə|.⊓◸.⨉⨉⋊|" Translating... |Do you really think you can fool me with that disguise?
Tenshinhan, Krillin, Yamcha, and Goku exchanged confused glances, their eyes darting from Hero to Junior. "Did you catch what they were saying?" Krillin asked, his voice edged with both curiosity and concern.
Yamcha shrugged, just as baffled as the rest. "Sounded like some kind of weird language, didn't it? I'm just as confused as you."
"But they seemed to understand each other," Tenshinhan observed, his voice carrying a mix of surprise and unease.
"Yeah, that's what's strange about it," Krillin agreed as Goku remained silent, his brow furrowed in deep thought, clearly focused on deciphering the exchange between Hero and Junior.
"P ∟♁⨕∙ ⨅⌟◺⌝ |▷◺⌝.⊓ ⨕∙∟◸.⋥.ɛ |▷◺⌝.⊓'▯:⋊|, ɛ♁∆∙◸.!" As Junior's guttural, otherworldly words reverberated through the arena. Translating... |What do you think you’re doing here, Kami!
There was a flicker of irritation in Junior's eyes, met with a smirk of amusement from Hero. The two exchanged their strange language, harsh and alien, until Hero responded with something that left both warriors glaring at each other in silence.
The announcer's voice cut through the uncomfortable quiet, attempting to engage the crowd and make sense of the situation, chimed in, "Both Junior and Hero are speaking in a language we've never heard before! But the meaning is clear in any tongue—these two warriors are out to get one another. I think..."
Uncertainty colored the announcer's tone, mirroring my feelings. My brows furrowed as I tried to decipher their conversation. Did they share a history? My thoughts were interrupted by Junior's laughter—loud, proud, and ominous. It sent a shiver down my spine, the unease creeping into my skin, reminiscent of King Piccolo.
"|▷◺⌝.⊓'▯:⋊| ▯⊐:.⊓☉☉◸.⋥.Ə|! ⨕∙ ∟⋊|▯:⋊| ◸.⨉⨉ ⋥.◺⌝⨕∙ ∟◸.⋥.Ə| |▷◺⌝.⊓ ⩞♁⋥. ⨅⌟◺⌝ ⨕∙◺⌝ ⨉⨉⨕∙◺⌝⨿⁚ ∆∙⋊|!" Translating… |You're bluffing! There is nothing you can do to stop me!
Junior's tone shifted from bitterness to cockiness as he continued in his native tongue. Hero's smirk faltered briefly before he responded, chuckling in amusement. Whatever Hero said made Junior's eyes widen in disbelief and panic, his posture stiffening with a rare vulnerability.
Yamcha's voice broke the tension, his tone laced with concern and curiosity. "Whatever they are saying, Junior doesn't seem happy about it." The others nodded, sharing similar thoughts as Hero and Junior continued their cryptic exchange.
Suddenly, Hero reached into his pocket, withdrawing a small bottle that sparked a fresh wave of questions in my mind. He unplugged the cap and carefully placed it on the ground.
"Hero has revealed a bottle and placed it on the ground; it doesn't register as a weapon. So... the match will continue. It might be some sort of magic charm," the announcer speculated, sounding more uncertain than authoritative.
I glanced at the bottle, noticing red writing on it. Realization struck me, sending my heart racing with perplexity and desperate hope.
"No! Not that!" Junior's voice cut through, his fear was noticeable as his eyes widened in terror. At that moment, a sadistic glee flickered in my eyes.
Hero leaped back, calculating and precise. His hands outstretched, a surge of energy illuminated his form as he shouted with sheer determination, "Evil Containment Wave!"
The words sent a thrill through my entire being, and the world around me fell into a tense silence. My heart thumped with ecstatic anticipation; I watched with bated breath as Hero unleashed a torrent of energy, creating a blinding light and roaring wind. Squinting against the brightness, I savored every moment. A smile crept onto my lips behind my facemask, uncontrollable and raw with hope. The light enveloped Junior, the containment nearly complete.
This was it.
As the attack neared Junior, a spark of light flickered within the blast, causing me to flutter my eyes, adjusting to the blinding intensity, but nothing could prepare me for what came next.
The energy of the Evil Containment Wave is twisted and reversed, the light bouncing back, redirected by Junior toward Hero. In a flash, the tide turned against Hero. He was tangled within the very technique meant for Junior. Everything seemed to slow down; moments stretched into an agonizing eternity.
Hero was trapped in the wave, struggling to break free, but Junior's control was absolute. With deft precision, Junior aimed the concentrated light toward the open bottle, seizing the opportunity to ensnare Hero permanently. But then, something happened. Something came out of his body and it looked like Junior. Someone had used Hero, a human, to disguise themselves, and they were trapped within the wave, leaving Hero behind.
Junior continued to guide the light, aiming it at the opened bottle, trapping the being within. He sprinted towards it, plugging the cap back inside.
Silence settled around me, a stark contrast to the disarray flaring. My mind reeled, thoughts racing yet frozen in dread as I stared at the unconscious Hero left laying face on the ground after—whatever was possessing him—departure from his human body and my stomach twisted in a knot. My heart throbbed, almost as if it stopped beating. I stopped breathing—no, I felt suffocated as the implications settled upon me.
Junior had managed to reverse the entrapment.
And that only meant one thing.
Was this the way he was going to get his revenge? His father's revenge?
The weight of the moment pressed down on me, a suffocating realization that history might repeat itself — that I could be the next one trapped, tortured in isolation for eternity.
It was a fitting revenge for the one who had betrayed King Piccolo and entrapped him for centuries.
Fear gripped me, a primal terror clawing at my insides. Images of past torment flashed through my mind; memories I had fought so hard to bury. Memories of my previous entrapment flooded back, the endless darkness, the crushing solitude, the unending torment of repeating death.
Sweat trickled down my forehead. Panic surged through me, threatening to overwhelm what little composure I clung to. Junior's smug smirk cut through the haze of my terror. He could see the fear in my eyes as they shifted from sadistic glee to panic.
It was his turn to relish and savor my reaction.
In that moment of paralyzing fear, I saw the abyss staring back at me. Junior's eyes bore into mine, mocking my vulnerability. While holding the bottle in his hands, a reminder there was someone inside the bottle, it was almost satire that he may have known I might consider using that technique on him.
Clearly, that wasn't going to work.
A cruel glint sparkled in Junior's eyes as he observed my terror-stricken expression. He was reveling in my dread, enjoying the power he wielded in that moment. My breath hitched, my vision narrowed, and my heart pounded so violently that it felt like it might burst. Every fiber of my being screamed in protest, unwilling to face the fate Junior had planned.
Trapped forever. Alone. Tortured.
I couldn't go back to that. I couldn't survive it again.
I barely came out of that with a fragment of my sanity.
My mind spiraled, thoughts racing, crashing into each other in a chaotic whirlwind. The world around me blurred further, Junior's smirk was a haunting beacon in the turmoil. My legs felt weak, threatening to give way beneath me. The thought of being sealed away, of losing my sanity, gnawed at my very soul.
"Hey, are you okay?" Tenshinhan's voice cut through the haze, a lifeline in my panic. I hardly registered his presence, my mind locked in a battle with my own demons.
"I..." My voice sounded ragged, my throat dry. The words died on my lips as I struggled to compose myself. Tenshinhan could see the raw panic in my eyes, a deep-seated fear that seemed to grip me with a vice-like grip. He stepped closer, his expression concerned, as he tried to reach me.
"Breathe," he said firmly. "You need to breathe."
I attempted to follow Tenshinhan's advice, but each inhale felt inadequate, my focus consumed by Junior and the haunting resemblance he bore to his father, King Piccolo. Backing away, I was lost in a tumult of memories, the terror of past captivity threatening to overwhelm me. Desperation clawed at my chest, urging flight from the imminent threat. I couldn't afford to be trapped again. Not like this. Not by Junior.
Tenshinhan reached out, his hand gently gripping my arm to steady me. "Hey, calm down," he repeated, his voice a blend of firmness and reassurance. "Focus on me. Take a slow breath through your nose, then exhale through your mouth."
Yamcha observed, his eyes flicking between me and Tenshinhan, while Krillin kept a respectful distance, worry etched on his face as he watched my distress. But they knew Tenshinhan could handle the situation. He was the most level-headed among them.
Meanwhile, the announcer's countdown for Hero's unconscious form underscored the tension in the arena.
"Look at me," Tenshinhan instructed firmly, his eyes locking with mine, blocking the view of Junior. "Breathe in slowly. Inhale. Hold it for a moment. And exhale. Slowly. You need to calm down. You're going to hyperventilate."
But Something inside me snapped.
The panic, the fear, the memories — they all funneled into a single, blazing point of desperation. I focused intently on Tenshinhan's guidance, breathing deeply and methodically. Inhaling through my nose, holding briefly, and exhaling through my mouth, I felt my racing heart begin to slow.
Soon my vision cleared, and my breath steadied. My panic began to subside, replaced by a steely focus. I straightened up, my breathing still ragged but controlled. There was only one thought that remained, burning with clarity and purpose: I couldn't let Junior win.
Tenshinhan observed the shift in my demeanor, his grip on my arm easing as he saw the quiet strength returning to my gaze. Goku, on the other hand, took glances at both my state and Junior, his eyes filled with anger — a silent communication that suggested a deeper history between him and Junior.
Yamcha broke the silence, his voice a welcome relief. "You okay now?"
I nodded. Anger burned away the fear, a fire fueled by desperation for survival. I couldn't be weak. I couldn't afford to be weak. Not now. My eyes glanced at Tenshinhan's hand gripping my arm; it was awkward since I was a stranger to them, yet for a moment, there was an odd sentiment that someone had helped me.
But I pushed the thought away, focusing on the situation at hand.
Tenshinhan released his grip on my arm with a pat that felt almost brotherly, satisfied that I had regained my composure. The familiar noise of the crowd's cheers and the booming voice of the announcer reverberated through the arena, snapping me back into the present moment.
"Junior wins the match by knockout and will now advance to the championship round against Anonymous!"
The name rang in my ears: 'Anonymous.' Throughout this tournament, I had avoided facing Piccolo Jr., but now, as I stood there, all hesitation dissipated. I didn't care anymore.
Taking a few steps forward to gain a better view of the arena, I observed the announcer knelt beside Hero, attempting to rouse him from unconsciousness. Slowly, Hero stirred, groggy and disoriented, aided to his feet by the announcer. The audience flared in applause for Hero's valiant effort to reach the semi-finals.
But my attention swiftly returned to Junior, who stood there with the bottle clenched tightly in his hand, his smirk unwavering. His eyes met mine, and he saw it—my resolve, my determination not to back down despite my earlier panic attack.
We locked eyes, a silent battle of wills. Anger surged within me, mingled with a deep-seated fear and a desperate resolve. One thought consumed me: I will kill Junior. It was the only way to ensure my safety, to prevent the horrifying fate he intended for me. This was no longer just a tournament.
It was about survival — my survival.
As my gaze bore into Junior's, my determination burned fiercely. But instead of faltering under my intense stare, Junior's smirk widened. He seemed to relish the intensity of my resolve. To him, it signaled fear, a delicious confirmation of his power over me.
A gong struck, a deep, resonant boom filling the air, starting as a sharp metallic clang before expanding into a rolling wave of sound that echoed through the arena. It momentarily broke my focus, drawing the attention of the crowd and the other fighters.
"Next up is the final round as Anonymous and Junior battle for the championship! Get ready for the most spectacular match of the day!!!" The announcer's voice excited the crowd, their excitement masking the true nature of the confrontation about to unfold.
"The fight will begin following a ten-minute intermission."
The ten-minute break stretched out like an eternity. It was a cruel pause, offering too much time for my thoughts to spiral, for my fears and doubts to metastasize. It was as if the universe was taunting me, prolonging the inevitable confrontation with Junior.
With a scowl, I turned away from Junior and returned to the tournament building. The gaze of the others followed me, but I ignored it, pushing forward with a single-minded focus, seeking a moment of solitude.
Inside the building, I found a wooden bench and sat down heavily, my thoughts spiraling out of control. The weight of those dreadful events pressed down on me, threatening to unhinge my already fragile sanity. My breaths came in shallow gasps again, my hands quivering as I clutched at my knees.
I couldn't shake the relentless urge to butcher Junior, to eradicate the threat he posed. Thoughts of consequences — of exposing my identity, of causing collateral damage, of risking capture — faded into the background. All that mattered was the singular goal of ending Junior's life.
The wooden bench beneath me creaked as I shifted, trying to steady my racing thoughts. Sweat beaded on my forehead despite the coolness of the air around me. The noises of the bustling tournament outside seemed distant, muffled by the commotion inside my skull.
The wait was excruciating, my mind playing out every possible scenario. My heart pounded against my chest, a relentless drumbeat of fear and determination. I closed my eyes, trying to calm myself and focus on the task ahead.
I didn't know how long I was waiting until a sudden chuckle shattered the silence, jolting me out of my thoughts. Tension coiled within me like a spring, my muscles tightening as I braced myself. Opening my eyes, I met Junior's gaze—smug, lethal, towering over me. He stood with casual arrogance, one hand resting on his hip while the other idly played with a fragment of his cape.
"Well, well, look at the state you're in. Afraid? Oh, you should be," he taunted, his voice dripping with venomous amusement. Anger surged within me, a blazing fire igniting in the depths of my chest, momentarily overpowering the despair that threatened to consume me.
I focused on controlling my breathing, forcing myself to maintain my calm facade. I remained silent, meeting Junior's gaze with defiance and apprehension, torn between the urge to lash out and the instinct to retreat. In the end, I just sat there, unwilling to give him the satisfaction of seeing my turmoil.
Junior's dark eyes flickered over me, drinking in the sight of my tense form. He seemed unperturbed by my festering rage, relishing the tremor that ran through me and the subtle betrayals of my tightly clenched lips. His next words were laced with danger, delivered in a low, menacing tone.
"All that waffling, all that scheming, all for naught. You've done well, [First Name]. You've survived this long."
His right hand shot forward, his long fingers enclosing my throat with swift brutality, the impact snapped, splintering, and crumpling the wooden bench beneath us, its splinters poked and stung my body. His grip tightened mercilessly, the pressure was instantaneous and suffocating, his thumbs digging into my windpipe, his sharp nails dug into my throat, causing small rivulets of blood that escape my neck.
I could barely breathe or speak; a scream lodged deep in my constricted throat. My eyes widened in panic, every nerve in my body tensing as I clawed desperately at his hand with renewed strength, fighting to loosen the vice-like grip on my windpipe.
The searing pain radiates through my neck, the blood rushing to my temples, my vision dimming on the periphery. My calloused hands, hardened by years of battles, found no purchase against his implacable hold. My attempts to break free only made him greedier for my pain.
Junior leaned into me, his face contorting into a mocking expression, and showed his fangs with a grin. "We both know, even if you can't die, I can make you wish for it." he hissed, his grip squeezing tighter, ready to crush my trachea.
He was right.
Even if I can not permanently die, I could still feel the pain. But if I die right here.
I would come back to life.

CHAPTER I: You swim in that?
PAIRING: Raditz/Reader RATING: Mature CONTENTS: Attempt at Humor, Canon Divergence AU, POV Alternating, Slow Burn. WARNINGS: None. WORDCOUNT: 2689
Summary:
His line of thought gets interrupted when Raditz notices the human female walking out of the house. You’re just wearing a swimsuit after all, and he can’t help but stare for a solid minute, taking in your entire body wearing such flimsy clothes. You seem just as taken aback as he is, clearly more puzzled by his presence though.
He feels his face get hot, he knows he must be blushing.
Raditz understands now what Kakarot has been doing all this time on this goddamn planet.
Notes:
This fic started with the funny premise on the summary and it grew long arms and long legs and it's now an incredibly long fic, with more or less 10 chapters. I also wrote this to be a contrast to my other fic Close Encounter, hence the slow burn tag.
I already wrote this up to chapter 8 or so, so I still have some things left to write, but I'm gonna update this regularly.
The contents and warnings will change for each chapter so look out for those!
“Is Goku coming then?” You ask, stepping down from Bulma’s hover car as you walk over to Kame House.
“Master Roshi invited him so I’m guessing he is…” Bulma says, walking in front of you to get to the door.
“It’s been such a while since we last saw him…” You murmur to yourself.
Five years since the last Tournament and since Goku took off with his new bride. Sometimes it’s still hard to comprehend he got engaged so fast, you couldn’t wait to ask him about marriage life; he tied the knot so young, he was probably surprised by the experience.
You greet Krillin and Master Roshi after not seeing either one of them for years (and Roshi gets bonked in the head, courtesy of Bulma, because of an inappropriate joke). It’s easy to fall into the dynamic you always had; Bulma keeps complaining about Yamcha, like she always does, making you roll your eyes (the poor guy doesn’t deserve it), and Krillin silently judges her for being so dramatic, which makes you laugh.
A sunny day is expected, and so far it has been like that, so you quickly excuse yourself to get changed into your pink swimsuit, wanting to take advantage of the weather and sunbathe a little.
Goku arrives immediately afterwards, and your mouth drops open when he brings his four year old son along with him.
*
Raditz could not believe the state of this planet. Kakarot was supposed to eliminate its population, wasn’t he?
If it wasn’t for his scouter signaling some high power levels around, he would have thought his brother was annihilated by these weaklings. But that couldn’t be it. He’s a Saiyan, even as a child, it should have been enough power for him to get rid of this plague in a month or so. He has already encountered that green man earlier, he doesn’t want to assume that such a weak bug would have eliminated him.
What happened then?!
“Fuck you, Kakarot, you had one simple mission…” He grumbles, flying at high speed towards the location his scouter is pointing him to.
The high power is moving rapidly, and Raditz smirks when it suddenly stops. Kakarot is going to get an earful and a beating too, for good measure, and he speeds up to get to his destination so he can finally know what’s happening.
He lands roughly on a beach of a small island with a pink house. And there he is, his own brother, easy to recognize because he looks so much like their father, surrounded by three humans. Kakarot looks bewildered, staring at him with his mouth hanging open. Raditz frowns, extremely annoyed. He is willingly hanging out with this species?
“Kakarot! What’s with the condition of this planet?!” He practically yells, exasperated when Kakarot looks even more confused by his every word. “Your mission was to exterminate this species! What game have you been-”
His line of thought gets interrupted when Raditz notices the human female walking out of the house.
“What’s going on?” You ask, looking at Kakarot and the other humans. They seem just as intrigued by your presence and his reaction at your appearance, with the way they keep glancing back and forth. “Who’s that?”
“I would like to know that too!” Kakarot spits, still in a defensive stance.
But Raditz isn’t paying him any mind. He keeps staring at you, perplexed and stunned. Do all human females wear those clothes?! He hasn’t noticed it on his way here, and even the other woman on the island isn’t wearing anything that revealing.
It isn’t just the attire, however. The clothes are distracting enough, but you are attractive. Enough to make him forget about why he’s there in the first place.
You blink a couple of times, clueless, before turning your eyes towards the other humans beside you.
“Can someone tell me what on Earth is happening?”
Raditz snaps out of his own head at your question, shaking his head slightly, just in time when the little bald Earthling approaches him. He has to focus, he’s there for a reason; to get Kakarot back so he joins their group. Distractions are not allowed; he can’t fail a mission this simple, it’s literally a piece of cake, and no female will distract him from it, no matter how alluring they are.
*
It has been a shock to find out that Goku has a brother, but it’s even more startling that he’s an alien. It makes sense in retrospect, but it’s not like a lot of people would have gotten to that conclusion with certainty.
Raditz stared at you the moment he saw you, and you figured it had a lot to do with the swimsuit you were wearing. Which was hilarious, but you were too concerned about Gohan being kidnapped and Goku going after him to laugh about it at that time. Only Bulma cracked a joke, and you rolled your eyes, blushing a bit but brushing off her comment. You did notice he’s attractive, but the fact that he was violent and threatening Goku and this planet preoccupied your mind.
Now, however, you’re looking at his face as he lays unconscious on a very high-tech hospital bed at Bulma’s house, in one of its many rooms, connected by cables to computers and monitors. Goku insisted before dying that his brother stays alive, and no one refused him (Piccolo did try to talk him out of it, but it was futile). And if you were honest, you didn’t want him to die either, for reasons probably just as selfish as Goku’s. You’re glad everyone complied; Bulma knew you well enough to let you monitor him on your own without questions, so you got to see him everyday. Unconscious, but you count your blessings. You got to stare at his handsome face and even his toned chest too, even though most of his torso was covered in bandages; but now you want to hear him talk, even if he goes back to threatening the Earth or something.
It has been a week since Raditz has been like that, he did lost a lot of blood after all. But even you know he’s healing abnormally fast. Any human could have died from that injury, but he hadn’t. And his superficial wounds are long gone. A Saiyan, that’s what Goku and Raditz were. You still can’t wrap your head around it.
You’re on the verge of dozing off one day when you hear the sheets shuffle slightly. You practically jump from your seat to approach his bed, staring at him to see if he wakes up. Raditz does wake up, sitting up abruptly as soon as he opens his eyes, making you yelp loudly.
“You scared me!” You practically yell at him, clutching your chest.
He stares at you with wide eyes, panting, as he calms himself down slowly. You hope he remembers meeting you before, because he certainly seemed intrigued back then, and you hope that’s enough reason for him not to attack you. You’re just a human after all, even in his state, he could harm you if he wanted to.
“You’re that girl with the skimpy clothes…” He finally says, eyeing you up and down slowly.
“Huh?” You gape at him momentarily before you understand what he means. “Oh, my swimsuit you mean?”
“Your swimsuit? You swim in that?”
“Yes, that’s what it’s made-”
“Is all your species this indecent?”
“Woah, hey! You’re alive because of us, you know?”
Raditz groans, obviously in pain, and you immediately shut your mouth.
“Are you in pain? You should lay back down.”
“Where am I?” He asks, ignoring your words.
“This is my friend’s house. We-”
“Why am I here?”
“I-”
“And what are you doing here?”
“Maybe you should let me speak?” You ask, a little annoyed at this point. He stares at you, and you take his silence as a signal to go on. “You were bleeding pretty badly after your fight with Goku and Piccolo, so we brought you here. We did our best to help you heal, but it’s going to take a while until you’re better. I’ve been checking in on you every day, you’ve been passed out for a week.”
He doesn’t look pleased at all, but he doesn’t look like he’s going to strangle you either, so you take it as a win. He frowns deeply, inspecting all the bandages in his body, wincing when he twists his body in certain ways.
“Raditz, that’s your name, right?”
You remember it perfectly, but maybe asking him about it would mellow him out a bit. He doesn’t reply, so you take the opportunity to introduce yourself. He only looks at you curiously, clearly in a defensive stance (or as defensive as he can be in his state).
“You should rest. Are you hungry? I can have food brought in.”
“Aren’t you my brother’s ally?”
“Yeah, I am, why?”
“I could kill you right now.”
“Ok? Why are you telling me that?” You frown.
“Why are you helping me?” He practically growls. He does look menacing due to how big he is, but he also looks in pain.
“Why not?” You shrug. “You don’t remember what happened before you passed out?”
Raditz doesn’t reply, but he continues to glare at you. He must not remember; it would make sense since he was bleeding a lot before he fainted. He wouldn’t remember that Goku asked you to keep him alive because he didn’t want to kill him.
*
When Raditz woke up in that bed in what looked like some kind of hospital room and you were right in front of him, he didn’t know if it was a blessing or a curse. You were distracting enough, he didn’t have time to entertain himself with an earthling.
The second thing he felt once awake was pain. His entire torso ached, and that’s when he noticed the bandages. You told him that he was bleeding profoundly, but he barely remembers that.
Why are you even helping him? He’s your enemy after all. He knows he’s weak in his current state, and without the healing tanks, he’s going to take a little longer to heal, but Saiyans still recover pretty fast compared to other species. He could wait a week, or even a month, and kill you then. Why are you taking the risk?
Raditz doesn’t remember what happened with that green guy and his brother. Is Kakarot dead? It would be safe to assume that he is, he does remember almost being hit directly by that powerful beam, but his brother did get hit. But even if he’s dead, he can’t deal with his companion in his current state.
Which leads him again to the question of why he’s even alive. The memories of the last couple of minutes in that last fight are fuzzy. Surely that guy wouldn’t have let him go that easily, he is a threat to this planet after all.
Raditz groans loudly, rubbing his temples. He might have to ask you about it, but he’s not sure he can trust you yet. As captivating as you are.
“Are you in pain?” You ask him when you enter the room the next morning after he wakes up. “Since you’re not human, I’m not sure how many painkillers we can give you.”
“Tell me what happened before I passed out.”
He ignores every word you said, and that seems to bother you by the twitch in your eyebrow and the slight pout on your lips. Which is rather cute, he has to admit.
“Ask nicely and maybe I’ll tell you.”
“Do I have to remind you again that I can kill you?”
“Yeah well, do it then.”
Arching an eyebrow, Raditz scoffs.
Threatening to kill you is a bad idea, simply because he knows he doesn’t want to. But since you’re daring him to do so… he should do it, right? Why would he care if you live or die, this planet is doomed anyway.
You smile at him, like you know he won’t lift a finger to touch you, and it pisses him off a little. A part of him, however, likes your attitude. He won’t ever say it out loud, though.
“Don’t worry, I’m not withholding information from you on purpose. I just want you to be nice to me, that’s all.”
“I’m not nice.”
“I can tell.” You roll your eyes playfully. “But you can try. After all, I've been taking care of you from the beginning.”
“God knows why you’re stupid enough to do that.”
His words do make you angry this time, your face twisting in a way he hasn’t seen yet, and he smirks proudly. His provocation worked this time.
“We’re not all homicidal maniac aliens, okay?! I was hoping you’d wake up from your coma soon, but I didn’t think you’d be this rude!”
“You were hoping I’d wake up?” Raditz snorts loudly, not even containing his laughter. “Are you insane, girl?”
“Yes, I’m crazy enough to want to talk to you!”
“Why?”
“Because I think you’re handsome, dumbass!”
Raditz balks, taken aback by your words, and he soon feels his face heat up. Just like that first time he saw you. You still stare at him with ire in your eyes, your first turned into balls by your sides. He’s not even sure what to say, but making you angry had been a terrible idea; not only did you confess to finding him attractive, but you also look incredibly more appealing than usual now that anger is adorning your features. And he doesn’t know what to do in this situation.
“So I think the best thing you can do is be nice to me.” Luckily for him, you go on speaking after a beat, still clearly annoyed, but a little calmer.
At a loss for words, Raditz looks elsewhere so you won’t notice the blush on his cheeks. When you turn to ask for breakfast through the phone, he briefly looks your way, and notices how red the tip of your ears are. At least he’s not the only one who's embarrassed. You usually hang around the room with him, even if he’s not necessarily a conversational wonder, but this situation must have made you feel embarrassed because you leave the room shortly after requesting for food.
He dwells on your words now that he’s alone. You thought he was handsome, now what? He does find you attractive, it must have been obvious by the way he stared at you the moment you met, as embarrassing as it was. He never had to chase after a woman before, so he’s not sure what to do. What are Earth courting customs anyway? For what he vaguely remembers about his own people, courtship usually involved offering a trophy, like an animal hunted for solely that purpose. But that was a mating proposal. This isn’t mating. He just wants to fuck you.
The first thing he should do is get used to standing on his feet without twisting in pain before considering doing any other kind of straining activity. Saiyans heal fast, but getting to that point is going to take a while.
Raditz grunts, sinking into the bed. How stupid is he? He shouldn’t even consider any of this. Nappa and Vegeta are coming to Earth. He remembers them sharing that information with him through his scouter…
Fuck, what even happened to his scouter? He’s going to have to ask you about it.
For some reason, he remembers feeling intense fury before passing out, when Nappa and Vegeta were talking to him. But he doesn’t exactly remember the reason.

Hot Take: Both Super and GT are canon in the Dragon Ball canon.
I feel like Frieza would be a bastard again, be killed, Goku and Vegeta eventually defeat Beerus, have a final clash against each other, Goku beats Vegeta and he admits again how Goku is stronger. After Beerus has left, the lack of threats on Earth cause Goku and Vegeta's god-like powers to disappear, explaining why SSG, SSJSSG, MUI, and MUE don't exist in GT and SSJ4 became the new most powerful form, Goten, Trunks, Pan, and Bulla grow up in between this time, leading to Goku going to train Uub, Kid Buu's reincarnation, thus leading to GT.
So basically, here's how I interpret the timeline:
Dragon Ball -> Dragon Ball Z -> Dragon Ball Super -> Dragon Ball Z Epilogue -> Dragon Ball GT

I don't that Vegeta really wasn't attached to Raditz and Nappa at all. He was above them as their prince, but I think the real reason for his detachment to them lies in how Frieza treated them.
While many depict them as a standard purging squad, I think it's more likely that they rarely all went on the same mission. Clearly, it wasn't necessary for all of them to handle a planet with low ki inhabitants. And Frieza had many good reasons (from his POV) to isolate Vegeta from the two others. I won't get into that right now because that's not what this post is about.
I headcanon that Saiyans - and especially Vegeta after he learns how to sense ki - unknowingly treat people according their power level. The race was made to fight. We constantly see Goku instantly interested in strong opponents to fight against and he naturally treats them differently from others like Upa. Likewise, Vegeta’s respect is directly connected to the person's ability to fight.
But he also sees the way Krillin fights. Not only does Krillin earn respect in Vegeta’s eyes when he was ready to kill him back on Earth. He also shows time and again on Namek how he doesn't back down when faced with imminent death. That might not be what Vegeta is used to from Raditz and Nappa.
(Just the fact that Nappa is begging Vegeta to help him probably makes Vegeta angry. We'll later see Vegeta in a similar situation after Frieza has beaten him, but he doesn't beg Goku for help; only for revenge)
I agree that it's very plausible that Vegeta instinctively wants to protect a Saiyan child, but Gohan has also proven his worth by continuously keep fighting; first against Vegeta and later against Frieza's men. All of this has earned him Vegeta’s respect.
Furthermore, neither Krillin or Gohan expect or ask for Vegeta’s help. He probably likes that too.
However, I will add a simple and straightforward reason that could explain his behavior as well, one that was likely intended by Toriyama: What are these people worth to him?
Raditz and Nappa have been useful during Vegeta’s time with Frieza, but when they're injured, far from any regeneration tank, they have lost their value.
Gohan and Krillin are useful to Vegeta on Namek and therefore worth keeping alive. If they stop being useful, he will stop caring.
It's a much colder interpretation of Vegeta, but I imagine that's how Toriyama saw him at that point. Cold, calculated and only out to fulfill his own goals no matter the cost.
I was thinking about the Namek Saga (as I often do ngl), and I find it really interesting that, despite all attempts to claim otherwise, Vegeta seems to care about Gohan and Krillin at least a little bit by the end of the arc. He's upset when he thinks Krillin got killed by Freeza.
Tumblr media
He saves Gohan without any actual benefit to himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although he does immediately claim it was to show off. Which I could take at face value I guess, but seriously? That's a pretty weak excuse. Especially because Freeza seemed to pick up on Vegeta having some concern for Gohan earlier.
Tumblr media
I do not believe you, Vegeta. Also, wow that was fucked up of Freeza, nice touch on the evil.
So I'd say that Vegeta does have at least some level of concern for Gohan and Krillin, which has formed impressively quickly given that they've been teamed up less than one day. I guess they did both assist in kicking Vegeta's ass a few weeks ago, which probably went a decent way toward winning his respect. It's not a level of concern deep enough for him to actually risk himself on their behalf, but he seems distressed by them being hurt. It would sort of make sense if this tenuous bond formed earlier when they fought the Ginyus together, but Vegeta actually saved them first.
Tumblr media
Again, I could take this at face value but c'mon. Saiyan prince, but tsundere king.
They do rescue him back, so maybe that's what earned them a tiny bit of loyalty.
Tumblr media
However, Vegeta certainly didn't seem like he was expecting it and is even annoyed that they did it. Which is a bit hypocritical of him given that he just saved them. However, this could be the reason why he rescues Gohan from Freeza later on. He could be repaying the favor. He doesn't gain any tactical advantage from that, same as Gohan didn't really gain anything saving him here. But it honestly doesn't even seem like he's thinking of this moment later on. It seems like he just saved Gohan sort of by reflex and then had to justify it to himself (and everyone else present).
Why Vegeta gets invested in Gohan and Krillin is already pretty interesting to me. (I've seen the opinion that Vegeta sees himself in Gohan without realizing it, which is possible. The parallels between them has been the subject of a few tumblr analysis posts. I've also seen the idea that Vegeta sees Gohan as a subject to protect because he's a Saiyan child. However, neither really explains Krillin.) I'd be interested in other people's opinions on it. I can see it being some level of mutual respect or even just the pure pragmatism of being able to use them later.
But I also end up with a secondary question. If Vegeta can save others, or care about them in this span of time, why does he treat the people who he's been partnered with for at least 25 years like this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously why is he so callous about them both? It's fascinated me for ages, especially because I can directly contrast it with his behavior in the following arc. Obviously the Doylist answer is that Vegeta went from basically pure evil one-off villain who was supposed to die to an antivillain with a smidgen of sympathetic traits between the first and second arc. But I want a Watsonian one. Especially because both Raditz and Nappa seem to think Vegeta would help them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why would they think he'd help them? And why didn't he do it? Especially because he does help his new teammates in the next arc. Did the three of them have an epic argument at some point recently and Vegeta isn't over it? Had Vegeta been gradually internalizing more of Freeza's values and decided to rebel against the values a little too when he switched to open rebellion? Had he been slowly losing respect for Raditz and Nappa and this was the final straw, but Krillin and Gohan had earned more respect? Or did he grant both of his teams the same level of concern but Gohan and Krillin do a better job at being competent on their own?

lmao are you really saying there's some conspiracy to undermine Krillin on your Twitter? xD Just accept people don't like the character and move on you weirdo. At least he doesn't have it as bad as Yamcha, who deserves it less. He comes off as a cuck because he doesn't even try to fight for or protect her, and he can't fight worth shit.
No. I said it sometimes feels that there’s a concentrated effort to do so because of a very, very weird POV the fandom seems to have about him based on nothing from the show. I’m very aware there’s no secret fandom meetings to set this stuff up, but it does feel like some in the fandom are very invested in pushing this narrative. He's fought for and tried to protect her several times, and even gave his life doing it once. He's also one of the best technical fighters in the series, exceptionally gifted with ki control and manipulation, and pretty gifted at coming up with some fairly unconventional strategies on the fly. I really don't know what show you're watching. Also, Yamcha catching unnecessary crap doesn't mean you need to try to redirect it like this. This is not healthy.

dragon ball super: super heroes [spoilers]
I loved it. my first DBZ cinema experience (sat in the back row, empty cinema except for one other guy, me in my DBZ shirt with a bottle of wine) and i loved it
gosh like,
FANSERVICE HELLO? i'm not talking about Bulma's arse on screen for that entire previous five seconds (though animators, take my first born child, I love you) but... the slice of life stuff? best green grandad Piccolo??
PICCOLO HOLDING A PHONE LIKE A FUCKING MORON GEEZ perfectly in character and whoever bought his phone case for him (videl?? bulma?? deserves the world)
ALSO, ACQUIRING AN INEXPLICABLE PLUSHIE COLLECTION??????
this is literally straight out of fanon
all of Bulma and Piccolo's phone calls, just chatting away
VEGETA MY BOY KILLING IT ON BEERUS' PLANET, I love that they got their moment but I love, love, LOVE that this was fundamentally Piccolo and Gohan movie
the entire set-up with the red ribbon army lore was incredibly iddy to me. outsider POV on the Z-gang, plus the entire plot being a ridiculous misunderstanding (entirely justified - Bulma is weird enough to be mistaken for an alien, no doubt)
Videl's back teaching fighting classes! pls we need real videl back and whatever they did to her over the last few years of the franchise ;_;
ORANGE PICCOLO ORANGE PICCOLO ORANGE PICCOLO ORANGE PICCOLO *draws breath* ORANGE PICCOLO ORANGE PICCOLO ORANGE PICCOLO
the fact that ORANGE PICCOLO was basically a favour from Shenron out of respect for Kami was MAD AWESOME and totally makes sense - I love the respect for the god lore here, and also subsequently Piccolo's interactions with Dende/Karin/Yajirobe
PAN. everything Pan!!! kills me we didn't see Bulla but she's only two, she'll be training by the next movie, she was probably just wreaking havoc at Capsule Corp with her junior chemistry set, it's fine (mad science first, martial arts mastery later)
big piccolo!!!!
all the flashbacks to scenes from DB and Z!!!
i was so meh on dynamax Cell, but I'm glad they didn't try to give him a personality or anything, they clearly needed a familiar face for the merchandising and power to them, thanks for not taking away from the charisma of OG Cell. like, it was fine, they did what they had to do
GOHAN USING THE MAKANKOSAPPO HAD ME IN TEARS
MY JAW WAS LITERALLY. OPEN. FOR TEN MINUTES
I HAD TO FORCIBLY CLOSE MY OWN JAW DUE TO THE IMPACT THIS MOVIE HAD ON ME
also. GOTENKS. "this is the first time a failed fusion has been useful" had me IRL cackling in the cinema. he just went all out and said it
I love that Goten and Trunks got to look badass for bit, but also provided peak comedy moments. Same with Krillin and 18, I know this wasn't their movie (next time, please, Toei???) but they got their moment and I was happy with it. SOLAR FLARE. KIENZAN. all the classics
also the animation, I know some people bounced off the 3d but seeing it cinemas it felt very... cinematic, and epic, and overall vibes. loved the superhero aesthetic and the manga-esque text and expressions, it all felt like such a love letter to the original medium.
the villains were great, the plot was incredibly iddy, gamma 1 and 2 were SO likeable (and the sacrifice at the end really meant something) and Pan was so sweet and I loved Piccolo and Gohan, and Bulma was brilliant and and and and
I just loved it. I really, really, really loved it.
